In Thailand, when you talk about prostitution, you talk about Pattaya. Known around the world as Thailand's number one sun, sea and sex destination, it is home to approximately 20,000 male, female and child prostitutes. Although the registered population is just 70,000, every November to March, about one million visitors crowd Pattaya's over 700 bars and nightclubs, and that doesn't count  massage parlors or steam baths.

If you talk statistics, it can seem hopeless. But when you go into Tamar Centre, you see people. Lovely ladies who've chosen to change the direction of their lives andin doing so, have found dignity, hope and a future.

Each week Tamar team members go into the red light area to build relationships with the bar girls and the ones on the beach.  The ladies are invited back to Tamar Center to learn English, and take part in special activities. The Tamar Drop In Center is in the heart of the city, in the area where most bar girls live and work. The ones who decide to leave prostitution can be part of a 3 month Christian live-in counselling, job re-training course. It's a time of tears and healing, of seeing self-esteem and value returned to women who have been deeply wounded. Through the course, they are prepared to return to Thai society in a way that reaffirms their dignity and self-worth.

Throughout the year, Tamar Center offers the ladies jobs in their card-making program, hairdressing salon or other income-earning activities. They now have a nursery as well. As many of the ladies come out of the bars, receive healing, and a new job, they are reunited with their children. So it is not just one lady who receives help, it is her whole family, and a whole new generation. 

Ask them "is there hope for the prostitution problem in Thailand, and they'll reply "Yes!" It all starts with a helping hand from Tamar Center. "
